Purpose

Formative Intentional Core™ · Third of Three · The Warrior A reflection from clinical practice

The Warrior — a mythic figure standing on a high grassland with a round shield strapped to his back and a tall wooden staff in hand, gazing across a valley in mid-morning light.

Purpose is not something you find. It is something you offer. Meaning does not come first, waiting to authorize the doing — it arrives after the offering.

A reflection from clinical practice

For most of my life I thought purpose was something you find. Something out there, waiting to be discovered, requiring the right map or the right teacher or the right retreat to reveal itself.

What I have come to see is that purpose is not something you find. It is something you offer.

Ten Bears used to say that purpose is what gives meaning to our actions — not the other way around. Meaning does not come first, waiting to authorize the doing. It arrives after the offering. You offer what you have, and in the offering the meaning arrives.

This changed my clinical practice. For a long time I thought my purpose was to help the people who came to me heal, and I carried that as a weight I had to earn every session. What I have learned is simpler: my purpose is the offering itself. Whether the healing lands is not up to me. What is up to me is whether I show up with what I have.

Purpose is not the thing you find. It is what happens when you stop looking and start offering.

Purpose is what completes the Warrior's formative Core. In time, it matures into what the Architect carries as Strength.

If this feels like it might be you.
