Courage

Mature Intentional Core™ · First of Three · The Architect A reflection from clinical practice

The Architect — a mythic figure standing beside a stone archway on a terraced hillside in high afternoon light, cradling a shaped stone in one hand.

Courage is not heroic. It is much smaller than that. It is meeting what the moment actually asks for — no more, no less. Ten Bears called this “the requiredness of the situation.”

A reflection from clinical practice

There is a moment in every session when the client says something that asks for a response I know will not be welcomed.

I feel the pull to soften it. To find a way to say the true thing without it landing as the true thing. Sometimes I take that pull. Not always. What I have learned is that the moments I take the softening are also the moments the work does not move.

Courage, in this practice, is not heroic. It is much smaller than that. It is meeting what the moment actually asks for — no more, no less. Ten Bears called this “the requiredness of the situation.”

Most days it is not dramatic. It is just saying the sentence that needs to be said, doing the thing that needs to be done, holding the position that needs to be held. It is the difference between offering a service and offering the truth of what I actually see.

The Warrior's Duty matures into the Architect's Courage when we stop needing anyone to thank us for what we chose to stand for.

If this feels like it might be you.
