There is a stage in every real practice when the loud voices move on.

The friends who cheered when you started. The teacher who first named it. The moment of decision that felt like it would change everything. Time passes. Life keeps moving. The people who were watching turn their attention elsewhere. And you are left, alone, with whether you still believe.

That is where Conviction begins.

Devotion was walking the road when it was interesting. Conviction is walking it after the interest has left, and no one is measuring whether you show up. It is standing with the practice not because anyone is watching, but because you know what you know.

I have not always had this. I have needed audiences. I have looked around, in my own quieter moments, and wondered if what I was doing mattered. What I have come to see is that the wondering was the last stage of Devotion. The moment I stopped needing to know was when Conviction actually arrived.
